The purpose of this study was to analyse the color of the natural deciduous teeth in
Korean children by means of the OPC -1001 DP Colorimeter which can be measured by
Adams coordinate system (L, a, b system).
The subjects were 90 children (43 boys and 47 girls) with good general condition and
normal tooth color, aged from three to fifteen year. The color of incisal third, middle
third, and cervical third of maxillary right central incisor, canine, and second molar in
deciduous teeth and maxillary right central incisor, canine, and second premolar in
permanent teeth were examined after the teeth were cleaned and dried.
The data were analysed statistically by means of SPSS(Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences) on Prime 750 Computer.
The results were as follows :
1. The mean of L(lightness), a (red chromaticity), and b (yellow chromaticity) of
deciduous teeth were measured.
2. The color of Korean deciduous teeth was bluish gray or bluish-green gray,
3. The L value of anterior teeth was greater than that of posterior teeth and the
incisor was greater than other teeth in the a and b values.
4. The L, a, and b values of incisal third were greater than those of the cervical third.
5. The average L, a, and b values of deciduous teeth were not statistically significant
differences between sex groups.
6. The age being increased, the L value of deciduous teeth was slightly decreased but
the a and b values of deciduous teeth were slightly increased.
7. The L value of deciduous teeth was greater and the a value of deciduous teeth was
smaller than that of permanent teeth, but the b values were not statistically significant
diflerences between dentition groups.
